Thank you, Ms. Sobrano-Wilson. This is very insightful. I’ve seen more than my share of violence and never once have I observed it solve a problem. It pains my heart to know that my granddaughters have to learn combat survival skills in elementary school. I believe the focus should be on developing problem-solving skills. The money would be much better spent in doing so too. I think the metaphor is such a powerful tool in articulating trauma. I’ve seen all the different responses to trauma in people – fight, flight, and freeze. What I believe I know is that nobody can predict how they will respond to a traumatic event. It’s not within our control. For whatever reason, my brain chose to fight every time. No one way is “right.” What is right is making it safe for traumatized people to be vulnerable with their traumatic experiences.
